According to analyst firm IDC, as much as 60 percent of corporate data resides unprotected on desktop and laptop computers. The most effective method of securing this information is full data destruction. With this method, once an organization has determined that a computer is unable to be recovered physically, it can be secure in the knowledge that the data can't be accessed. By combining encryption with data destruction, the next time the computer obtains a network connection and checks-in, it will be notified of the status change and will begin the self-destruction sequence. When data is destroyed, it is unrecoverable even if the hardware is located. When considering data destruction, the CIO should also consider backup as part of a comprehensive solution. By backing up data the user will be able to quickly recover by restoring the files to new hardware.
