The growth of configuration management database (CMDB) systems is one of the major drivers IT transformation, including greater collaboration and innovation. CMDB contains details about each configuration item and describes the most important relationships between items. Although it is part of ITIL, ITIL itself isn't the prime driver for CMDB adoption; the primary driver is the desire to integrate data from multiple solutions. That's because CMDB systems have two parents: one is ITIL, but the second is architectural; finding a way to integrate and reconcile management solutions in a manner that actually works. The point is that both CMDB and ITIL are themselves enablers to achieve greater operational efficiencies, better business alignment, and improved services. The power of CMDB can be enormous. Changes can be managed, controlled and validated with accompanying savings in operational costs, and a longer mean time between failures.
