Tech helped hunt for suspected Craigslist killer
Police faced a baffling crime when it investigated the alleged Craigslist killer, but they had their own high-tech tools to help track the suspect down. Police used computers to track down 22-year-old medical student Philip Markoff who has been arrested for his connection with the shooting death of a woman in a Boston hotel, reports InformationWeek.
In a courtroom appearance this week, they said Markoff left clues on his own PDA, through an IP address. They also said he created an e-mail account before answering ads on Craigslist, where he found his victim. The murder case also highlighted the problems of using websites like Craigslist. The victim, Julissa Brisman, was meeting someone at the hotel who had responded to her Craigslist ad for massages. The investigation into this murder and two robberies is forcing Craigslist to look into ways to increase safety on the site, according to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster.
