Teaching tech to your CEO
CEOs have to know a lot about a lot of things, but many of them just don't understand enough about technology to know how it should be used to further the business. That's where the CIO comes in. CIOs should function as CEO decision-support specialists. A CIO who can explain the business implications of technology-related decisions is invaluable to the CEO. That's because CIOs have the full package--internal recognition, credibility and corporate knowledge. As such, they can be a trusted internal voice for the CEO, clarifying the options and implications of technology decisions. To make sure your CEO understands enough about technology in the company, size up his or her technical competence, and always use examples when explaining the implications of technology-related decisions. Make clear how the CEO can manage or mitigate any potential downsides and don't oversell the advantages. Be clear and concise and provide training when necessary.
