Symantec and McAfee in heated race

The two leading makers of computer security software, Symantec and McAfee, are in a race for business. The New York Times reports this week that each has become more aggressive as they try to get their software tied to more new personal computers, websites and Internet service providers.

"It's like an arms race," Albert A. Pimentel, the chief financial officer of McAfee, told the newspaper. There's a constant race to persuade customers to renew their subscriptions or to switch to the competitor.

But the stakes are higher now that David G. DeWalt has become the head of McAfee. And McAfee is close to overtaking Symantec next year in sales in the business market, the newspaper reports. Right now, Symantec is the overall security market leader, with double the market share of McAfee, according to Gartner. This is a race to watch.
