The most popular technologies among IT executives are Windows 7 and unified communications, according to a survey just released by Computer Economics. The main conclusion the researchers drew is that companies are looking for solid ROI and low upfront cost in making new investments. Emerging technologies that don't offer certain returns remain less appealing.

Computer Economics surveyed 200 IT shops for its Technology Trends 2010/2011 report, which is written to provide guidance on 19 different IT technologies or initiatives. While just 3 percent of those surveyed had deployed Windows 7 at the beginning of the year, 31 percent said their 2010 spending plans include migrations to the latest Microsoft OS.

Forty percent of the survey respondents said they are spending funds on unified communications technologies this year, and 27 percent have already adopted UC solutions.
