Survey: Developers head to social networks

A new Evans Data survey shows that at least three-quarters of application developers belong to at least one social network, and two-thirds belong to multiple networks. The results of this survey of 400 developers illustrates that social networking is making headway in the business world and becoming more popular than ever as a business tool. Developers are far ahead of the general population, reports eWeek.com. A recent Pew Research Center study found that 35 percent of adult Internet users have a profile on a social network, far less than those in the Evans survey.

"This latest research shows that developers are like most active Internet users in terms of having a very healthy interest in social
networks," John Andrews, president and CEO of Evans Data, told eWeek.com. "Consistent with this the primary motivation for joining a social network is the desire to locate old friends and the need for general communications."

Developers have several reasons for joining networks. They are looking for an active community to share high-quality content. The survey also found that more than 90 percent of those responding look at blogs at least sometimes, and 70 percent feel that blogs are credible sources of information. The results of this survey show once again that the methods of communicating are changing in the business world, and the high-tech community needs to make sure it is on top of these changes.
