Enterprise database technology--a stalwart in the enterprise IT inventory--is in for a change, according to InformationWeek's Richard Winter. The main vendors in the sector, IBM (NYSE: IBM), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL), have come to be known for offering stability and a stream of updated capabilities, but new entrants are trying to edge into their business by delivering special analytics and management features.

IT professionals are growing weary of the hefty licensing and upgrading fees associated with database systems, according to a survey conducted by InformationWeek. More than half of the 750 pros surveyed said database licensing costs are overpriced. While that may not be a new sentiment, it is aggravated by soaring data volumes and workloads these days.

InformationWeek's "State of Enterprise Database Technology" report, takes an in-depth look at operational applications, analytical applications and extreme analytics. It presents a view of the vendors in the three areas and examines the emerging area of extreme analytics and security issues.
