A survey of 1,100 IT professionals by a Florida-based developer ScriptLogic revealed that 59.3 percent have no plan to roll out Windows 7. While about a third indicated they will be upgrading to the successor of Windows Vista next year, only 5.4 percent said they would migrate to Windows 7 this year.

While I expect the statistics to change as Microsoft ramps up its marketing, it is interesting to note that nearly 43 percent of the IT administrators attributed their decision to skip Windows 7 as "lack of time and resource." Another 39 percent named compatibility concern as a barrier.

Concerns over potential compatibility problems are interesting, and make sense given that more businesses run Windows XP than any other version of Windows. Seen in this light, Microsoft's decision to offer the free "XP Mode" in Windows 7 makes perfect sense. Windows 7 is scheduled for general availability on October 22 this year.
