Sun's Java decision draws applause

There was a strong buzz of excitement when Sun Microsystems began talking about taking Java on the open source road. But that buzz has only gotten stronger given the path of deployment the vendor is taking in fulfilling its promise. The fact that it chose to go the way of the general public license (GPL), which governs distribution of the Linux system, has developers salivating in anticipation. Sun could have gone a much more restrictive route, using the common development and distribution license (CDDL), but by choosing GPL it's opening many more doors for development opportunities and partnerships.
