Sun: Java will go open source
Sun has said it will make Java open source, but given the vendor's past record of such declarations, and the delay in handing off code on other applications, more than a few are not convinced it will happen soon. As others point out, even if it does happen the impact isn't going to rock anyone's world given all the Java builds in place and the lack of a need for variant technologies. Yet it would be viewed as a big win for those in the open source camp.
