Sun follows through on its open source promise

Sun Microsystems is clearly trying to win the hearts of open source developers these days, with the recent announcement that they are releasing two key Java pieces--the JavaC compiler and the Hotspot virtual machine. Just for good measure, it's also pushing out the Java Micro Edition system, a version for mobile gadgets. According to Sun, the push to open up doors to its proprietary technology is all about "engaging" the open source development community. It's a big step in a different direction from a vendor who refused to release its Java source code just a few years ago. Market pressure, and the belief that its code won't be "forked" are apparently behind the new attitude.
