Effective email archiving requires the right tools, which can help organizations not only create, disseminate and manage documents, but meet requirements for retention and legal discovery as well. But tools are just one part of the equation. To succeed with email archiving, CIOs must ensure that all parties--departments as diverse as IT, compliance and legal--are on board, and that their needs are served. That means working together to create an email archiving policy that takes into account privacy, compliance, business productivity and trends in litigation and discovery. Succeeding also means that CIOs must facilitate cost and risk discussions but leave policy to the policy-makers while enforcing policies that others have created.
