Study: 25 percent of U.S. IT jobs to head offshore
A new study by the Hackett Group, a Miami-based consulting firm, estimates that as many as one quarter of IT jobs at global 1000 firms may be moving offshore by 2010. The group estimates that these large companies, with revenues of at least $5 billion, will start the exodus in the next two years.
The data "is a confirmation of a mega-trend" similar to what happened in the manufacturing sector several decades ago, said Michel Janssen, Hackett's chief research officer. He estimates that the number may grow much higher; it could hit 60 percent or as high as 80 percent. Erik Dorr, Hackett's senior IT research director, said the big shift in jobs to low-cost offshore locations may be accelerating because companies are more experienced and comfortable with offshoring
