Successful CIOs are those who are as comfortable talking about business as they are about technology and innovation. It's all about being able to see both sides of the coin and say the same thing in different ways, depending on the interests and skill level of the audience. That's because CIOs today spend most of their time focused on business issues rather than technology. Successful CIOs also surround themselves with good technologists, who take much of the technology burden away from them. It's also important to have top-notch people skills for relationship-building and for hiring and retaining good IT staff. Other key skills are communication and the ability to explain technology to different audiences. All of this is somewhat of a sea change from the way that CIOs operated and were viewed in the not-too-distant past. Today, some CIOs are assuming the COO role or moving into other business management positions. Because of this trend, more CIOs than ever before have a chance of making it to the CEO spot.
