Storage virtualization is no panacea

Most companies are at least evaluating some type of storage virtualization technology, which can help organizations comply with regulations, save money and reduce staff. But relatively few have actually decided on or implemented a specific storage virtualization product due to sticker shock, integration concerns or worries that storage virtualization technology won't solve most of a company's storage problems. Those evaluating storage virtualization technologies have discovered what many already know: it's not a silver bullet to solve complexity in a disorganized environment. If you're going to implement storage virtualization, make sure you have a strong foundation and have simplified your environment as much as possible first. Once you have done that, however, it's probably inevitable that you'll end up choosing some type of storage virtualization technology; growth is pushing organizations in that direction anyway.
