It's a tough economic climate out there, and even if you haven't been touched by it thus far, you will be. Granted, the IT shop has some advantage that other departments do not. Nevertheless, it would be unthinkable not to be wearing your flak jacket at all times.

More than 50,000 tech workers lost their jobs before the financial meltdown hit, and more jobs may soon be axed. The survivors of the meltdown are also feeling the pain. In 2008, bonuses for IT workers rose only .2 percent from 2007 levels.

"Companies are in the mindset of not spending in the next three months and increasing only 1 or 2 percent in the next 12 months. That's quite a change from last year when it was between 7 and 8 percent," notes Steve Minton, vice president of worldwide IT markets at IDC.

To remain competitive, IT workers need a combination of security skills that include security, VoIP and wireless. Don't forget about Cobol which can be great job security. This week, we report on a special InfoWorld package of stories to help IT workers navigate the current rough terrain. It's important, above all, to keep your skills at top form and be flexible with an employer going through tough times.
