A publicly financed technology institute in Taiwan is working on standards for containerized data centers, with the goal of cutting the price of data centers in half and reducing energy use, reports Dan Nystedt of ComputerWorld.  The Industrial Technology Research Institute plans to have a prototype available by year's end.

The standards will apply specifically to data centers that fit in 20-foot shipping crates, similar to Sun Microsystems' Project Blackbox, which was made popular about four years ago. Containerized data centers make it easy to add new capacity on demand, either as a temporary or permanent measure.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) are two of the computer industry's pioneers in making containerized data center products. The group working on standards for the data centers also hopes to develop a Cloud software suite, Nystedt reports.
