Souping up America's fastest supercomputer

One of the fastest supercomputers in the world just got a bit faster, by doubling its speed. The Cray XT3 at Tennessee's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which is the top computer for scientific research in the US, can now perform 54 trillion calculations per second--quite a bump up from its former 25 trillion. The boost for "Jaguar" is the first step in advancing the supercomputer's capability to 1,000 trillion calculation per second by 2009.
