Should you peek at a worker's tweet?
Everyone is on Twitter, Facebook or another social networking site these days. And in all likelihood, your employees are logging on during their workday. Does that mean an employer has a right to look at their employee's tweet? A new survey by Deloitte found that 60 percent of executives queried believe they do have that right.
Employers said they have the right to know how employees portray themselves and their organizations. Workers bristle at the idea that their bosses could monitor their conversations online. Overall, more than 50 percent said their social networking activities should not be any concern of their employers. However, most them, 74 percent, acknowledge that the wrong comments on social networks could hurt their companies.
Business Week suggests a few guidelines for how employees should be using social networks during the work day or in their free time.
"We found a high percentage of employers who are thinking about what they should do but not a high percentage of employers who have concluded what those procedures and policies should be," Deloitte Chairman Sharon Allen told the magazine.
