Security challenges in the Linux/Unix world
The security challenges of enterprises living in the Windows world are well documented and many seeking tighter security have moved to Linux or Unix-based environments. While generally more secure, Linux and Unix environments are still susceptible to hacking. One of the most common security issues is how to effectively manage the root or super-user account. Without good controls, users with access to the root account have super-user privileges without justification based on their job classification, specific duties or role within the IT department. This can expose proprietary systems and information to malicious activity and could lead to sabotage, which in turn, could result in catastrophic information leakage or worse yet, problems that could bring down the entire organization. Make sure super-user accounts are fully monitored and dole out privileges and account access on an as-needed basis. Finally, consider your technology options for delegating responsibilities within Linux and Unix environments. Examine open-source alternatives carefully; while they have benefits, they also have drawbacks.
