RIM to roll out new BlackBerry features
The C suite is said to be smitten with the iPhone, but Research in Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) is rolling out a series of offerings this year to help BlackBerry win back the heart of the enterprise. Among the products on RIM's 2011 road map are a client for Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) SharePoint and enterprise application middleware, reports InfoWorld's Paul Krill. RIM is banking on the enterprise need for security and compliance features as more employees work from mobile devices.
The BlackBerry SharePoint client manages documents, enables collaboration with documents and integrates with BlackBerry applications, including email and calendar. Given the immense popularity of SharePoint, analysts see the BlackBerry client as a good move on RIM's part, Krill reports.
The BlackBerry Enterprise Application Middleware aims to enable the RIM smartphone to work better with applications designed originally for PCs, Krill reports. The middleware would make data sent from server-side applications more efficient and decrease the load on wireless networks.
RIM is also planning to make the BlackBerry Enterprise Server available via the cloud, which would include a web-based dashboard to manage BlackBerry devices.
