Report: Trojan attacks up, phishing down in '09
There's a lot of bad news out there on the cyberattack front, but here's a bit of good news: Phishing attacks dropped in the first half of the year.
In its semi-annual security threat report, IBM said the decline is good news, but cybercriminals may just be moving to other harmful tech attacks. While the number of phishing attacks dropped, Trojan malware was up 55 percent in the first half of 2009, according to IBM.
"The decline in phishing and increases in other areas (such as banking Trojans) indicate the attackers may be moving their resources to other methods to obtain the gains that phishing once achieved," said the study, reported by TechWorld.com.
Phishing attacks may be down because criminals "are likely getting better results with Trojans," said Dan Holden, X-Force product manager at IBM's ISS division. The web is a still a "dangerous place," Holden added. Cybercriminals are still exploiting software vulnerabilities or simply taking advantage of the open door at many companies, he said.
