Qwest opens cyber cloud center

Qwest Communications recently opened a new center in Washington, D.C., for cloud computing infrastructure services. It's Qwest's 17th cyber center in the nation, and the third in Washington, D.C.

Diana Gowen, senior vice president and general manager at Qwest Government Systems, discussed the opening of the new center and the cloud computing infrastructure services and provided some insight into where private companies are heading with their cloud services.

"It enables us to launch, with very little effort, our cloud computing services, that is--infrastructure as a service," she told the Fed Cloud blog.

The facility has increased security that allows for handling and storing classified information, she said. Cyberspace is not the only domain in which the new facility has increased security. There's tough physical security, too, gated entrances and security passwords.

Centers like Qwest's cloud facility are part of a growing trend among private IT companies to offer cloud services as well as more traditional services.
