Put your PCs on a diet

There's an easy way to save money at the workplace: Turn off the computer. Leaving your office computers on all night can jack up your electricity bill dramatically. So if you don't need a 24/7 on cycle, shut them down when the workers go home, according to an article Tuesday in the Wall Street Journal.

According to the article, a company that has 10,000 computer desktops can cost more than $165,000 a year in electricity bills. Computer manufacturers know how much can be saved, too. Dell Inc., for example, argues that its computers use 43 percent less energy after older cathode screens are swapped out for more efficient LED ones.

Hewlett Packard told the Wall Street Journal, it has saved more than 40 percent energy consumption on its new lineup of PCs, compared with its 2005 models.
