Proven ways to get more out of contractors
The potential benefits of outsourcing IT are well-known, but maximizing them takes effort on the part of the customer. To get the most out of your IT contractors, try these five "tried and true methods" from Peter Cannone, CEO of OnForce Inc.
1. Spell out your business objectives clearly before building a network of contractors. Know whether you're aiming to lower costs, expand your skill set, improve service quality or broaden your geographic reach. Outsourcing makes all of these things possible, but the goals need to be defined at the outset.
2. Do your homework before selecting a contractor, even if you're in a hurry to solve a problem. If you end up with the wrong contractor, it could mean extra visits, a higher bill and dissatisfaction all around.
3. Establish a deep enough pool of talent to optimize the use of skills and make the most efficient use of your contractor budget.
4. Set appropriate expectations and stay in constant communication with the contractors. Don't leave important things unsaid, like start time and contact information. Be sure you can get in touch with them if eleventh-hour changes have to be made.
5. Monitor performance and deliver feedback after each job. You can use a variety of metrics, including customer satisfaction, punctuality, number of visits or time on site. Be sure to make a note of professional behavior and encourage it.
