Protect your reputation online

There are all sorts of social media out on the web these days, and most of them do not filter what gets online. And if you are in the uncomfortable position of finding an unkind word posted about your work, you have little recourse to get it removed from a site. In some cases, you can get help, but it's a case-by-case basis.

If something negative is posted on a CIO.com site, for example, the publication will remove it on request, according to a recent blog post by the publication, on the subject. More importantly, according to the blog, IT executives are becoming more sensitive to the damage any bad words may have on any public site. IT leaders are beginning to understand the damage that the web and social media can do to their reputations and careers, and it's essential to pay attention to what's being said about your good name.

Online reputation management is essential for executives these days and a tough one to fight, experts acknowledge.

"As you climb the corporate ladder and become more visible, the chance of prospective employers Googling you is higher because they're taking more of a risk hiring you," Dan Schawbel, a personal branding expert and author of the forthcoming book Me 2.0: Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success, told CIO.com.

And while few blogs are willing to take down negative comments, know what is being said about you especially if you are applying for a new job, according to CIO.com
