Photobucket DNS hack under investigation

Register.com has said in a statement that they are currently "investigating the source of the problem" in relation to the DNS hijacking of the photo hosting site Photobucket. Earlier this week, some visitors to the site apparently were redirected to a blank page that had the approximate words, albeit in Turkish, "Is there anyone who remembers us? We thought you forgot us and we decided to remind you again." The problem was identified and fixed within an hour, though the exact duration of the resulting outage depends on the timeout period of the various caches of one's ISP. This attack follows closely in the steps of the May hijack of Comcast's DNS records, and begets the question of just how such attacks could even succeed in the first place.
