Options for CIOs who must move on

Perhaps your job is in jeopardy because of the economy, or there is a new CEO who wants to bring in a different team. Perhaps it is time for a change after doing the same tasks year after year. Maybe the requirements and demands of the job no longer fit your skills.

A timely article in Baseline Magazine suggests that there is hope for the CIO who must or wants to move on. And one option, at least as an interim move, is becoming a consultant. It can pay well. The knowledge and skills gained from past assignments can be beneficial to many companies. Working in new settings can mean developing additional expertise, and result in new skills, new contacts and perhaps enhanced job prospects.

"Consulting offers refuge, and sometimes riches, to CIOs who are interested in new challenges or who see their careers slowing as the economy deflates,'' said the magazine.

So if you feel like you've come to a dead end, rethink what you are doing. And remember that the skills that you worked so hard to obtain can still be useful commodities in this ever-changing world of technology. - Judi
