Open source advocate spawns startups

Open source advocate and venture capitalist Winston Damarillo is in the headlines once again as he revs up Simula Labs. Simula is spawning off sub-companies using a shared stack of open source components. Its first portfolio company, LogicBlaze, has pushed out Fuse, a services-oriented architecture that integrates Apache Software Foundation database, messaging and enterprise service bus technologies. The second company, Mergere, will provide a software life-cycle management toolset featuring Apache's Maven project. The application stacks are free--it's the support area where the companies say they'll make their money. As a follow-up, the open source maverick is looking to do something within identity management applications very soon.
