One-minute tutorial: Supply chain technology
Although the supply chain generally is the purview of others within the organization, the CIO must have more than basic knowledge, as the supply chain grows and extends into the IT part of the business. CIOs must grasp the latest in supply chain execution and management because the stakes are so high. An effective supply chain system should have a scheduling system that allows for integration with external routing systems or that helps create routes based on pre-defined business rules; telemetry monitors to provide integrated sensor devices and tags for capturing data to support predefined business rules, and vehicle and cargo tracking that supports real-time monitoring of the physical location of the vehicle and cargo and provides vehicle visibility on the date and time of the arrival and departure. It should also support real-time monitoring of the progress against the route plan, support the capture of Proof-of-Delivery (POD) via multiple methods at the point of delivery, and offer unscheduled stop monitoring, load/unload verification, and specialized monitoring/event handling.
