President-elect Barack Obama's plan to nurture a high-speed Internet for all Americans could create hundreds of thousands of jobs and help service providers grow dramatically. Building new networks to rural and under served urban areas--with possible help from the economic stimulus plan--could definitely help telecom, wireless and cable companies whose businesses have suffered in the last four months with the economic meltdown.

"We need to aim high with this," said Larry Cohen, president of the Communications Workers of America, "and public policy needs to catch up with the realities of the global economy."

Obama has many options on the table to increase broadband in the United States, including tax incentives and grants.

"Here, in the country that invented the Internet, every child should have the chance to get online," Obama said in a recent address, "because that's how we'll strengthen America's competitiveness in the world."
