New York City plans to save $100 million by merging 50 data centers serving 40 agencies into one facility located in Brooklyn. The hardware, software, gear and general construction for the warehouse will cost $11.7 million, and the space costs $2.7 million a year to rent, reports InformationWeek's Elizabeth Montalbano.

The data center consolidation is one component of a technology-driven initiative to make the city's government more efficient and responsive to customers. IT operations for the Department of Sanitation and the Mayor's office of Media and Entertainment have already relocated to the consolidated program. City officials expect the transition to be complete in 2014.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has made technology a high point of his strategy to improve city services, Montalbano reports. The city recently launched two crowdsourcing initiatives to gather ideas for making improvements.
