Notification systems are needed for emergencies

In the wake of last week's massacre at Virginia Tech, experts are warning that organizations need broader notification systems to inform people in case of emergencies. The main takeaway is that during a crisis, simply sending email messages isn't fast enough, but notification systems are a good way to quickly inform people of problems. These organization-wide alert systems, such as those from Avtex, MessageOne and Emergency Communications Network, send messages to the phones of participants; a typical deployment costs between $15,000 and $40,000 annually for 40,000 users. The system is managed and set up off-site in remote data centers operated by partner companies.
