New software to view web on TV

A small New York startup known as Boxee is creating excitement over its software that pipes Internet video and music sites to large monitors or television screens.

Boxee gives users a single interface to access all the photos, video and music on their hard drives along with a wide range of television shows, movies and songs from Internet sites. It also offers a well-organized directory, which can be navigated using the remote controls that now ship with most computers.

The New York Times reports that some two dozen chief technology officers from the country's largest cable companies visited the Boxee demonstration area during the Consumer Electronics Show this month in Las Vegas. Word spread quickly, and the Boxee booth was swarmed by visitors over the next three days.

The software is free and available for download. It works with Mac and Linux computers, and on Apple's set-top box, Apple TV. A version of Boxee for Windows PCs is being tested among a limited group of users.
