New privacy rules could hit Google, Microsoft
The Federal Trade Commission is proposing new rules that would greatly expand the number of companies required to notify individuals if their personal health data is exposed. These new rules would impact vendors offering personal health records and organizations that send health information to or from a patient-controlled health record. Among the companies impacted are Microsoft's HealthVault and Google Health, the FTC said.
Is this another headache for your company? It might be. According to a NextGov.com article, the rules would impact companies that provide web-based services and support related to consumer health. As the Obama Administration's goal for e-health record adoption moves forward, this proposed rule could slow things down as companies work through compliance.
