New approach needed for storage

CIOs are beginning to rethink data lifecycle management. In recent years, Hierarchical Storage Management, or multi-tiered storage, has been the norm--moving data off high-end storage subsystems onto cheaper media.

But Stewart Buchanan, a research director at Gartner, says this approach alone is able to deal with growing information costs and regulatory demands faced by CIOs. Buchanan tells SeachCIO.com that companies need to deploy an "overarching enterprise-wide information architecture that integrates storage needs and costs with business applications and processes."

What that means is turning to DLM architecture. This not only includes HSM, but an archiving system that indexes all critical and compliance-related information, backs it up and stores it where it can't be tampered with and can be discovered and accessed in a reliable and timely fashion.
