Mozilla pays new heed to enterprises

Mozilla's commitment to the enterprise market has sometimes seemed a bit unsure, particularly with its strategy of rapidly releasing Firefox updates, but this week the open source company made it clear it wants to engage business users. In a blog post Tuesday, Mozilla said it is re-establishing an Enterprise User Working Group, reports Thomas Claburn at InformationWeek.

The working group aims to serve IT groups and developers wishing to share best practices and challenges surrounding the deployment of Firefox in the enterprise. The company defended its rapid release cycle as an imperative to remaining competitive in the browser market, but it acknowledged that the cycle has been controversial.

An earlier version of the working group met three times back in 2007. This time around it will entail a monthly telephone conference and a forum once a year. Among the goals is the establishment of a governance group that will represent Firefox's enterprise users. The group will also be involved in recruiting like-minded companies, driving enterprise requirements and coming up with guidelines for deploying Firefox.

"In a nod to the controlled corporate culture of enterprises and a surprising repudiation of Mozilla's tradition of open communication, the calls will be private to the group, and participants will not have to identify their corporate affiliation," Claburn wrote.
