Mistakes to avoid when applying for an IT job
In this economy, having experience may not be enough. When applying for an IT job, ComputerWorld.com has some advice for getting your foot in the door for an interview. For starters, make your objectives clear and be precise if your expertise is related to networking, security, databases, web development or other specialties. And whenever possible, show you understand how technology affects the business.
It also would be prudent not to list old skills or trumpet achievements from 10 years ago that have no relevance today. Try avoiding the overuse of information technology acronyms and be careful not to misuse industry jargon. And make sure you do your homework, and know what an employer is seeking. That means looking beyond the job title.
In other words, make sure you match your experience to each position. And finally, remember that your résumé will be viewed by a number of people--the technology professional, human resources and the position's supervisor. Your résumé should talk to all of them.
