Microsoft tosses hat in virtualization arena
While VMware was the belle of the virtualization ball in San Francisco, the company was not alone in expressing its interest in this exciting market. If there's money and a computer is involved, then it should come as no surprise that Microsoft wants to enter the picture. According to InformationWeek, Microsoft is betting that virtualization in the Windows operating system will further establish the company in the enterprise. Microsoft plans to integrate the Viridian hypervisor software into Windows Server 2008, which is scheduled to be released in February. VMware, is not too worried, though. The company believes that all the virtualization action will take place within the hardware. Market researchers believe Microsoft has a long row to tap into VMware's current 70 percent market penetration.
