Is Microsoft going mobile?

Microsoft is dismissing rumors that the company may be getting into the mobile phone business. The recent Microsoft smartphone talk was triggered last week by analyst firm Broadpoint AmTech, which predicted in a report that Microsoft will debut its first-ever smartphone at the annual 3GSM World Congress that kicks off Feb. 16 in Barcelona.

"Microsoft has no plans to make a phone," Scott Rockfeld, Microsoft's director of Windows Mobile, said in an email to InternetNews.com. "Our core focus has been and will continue to be providing software plus services and working with our partners to deliver great phones. Our partners have been integral in our success to date, and we are excited about the innovation we are bringing to the market together."

While Microsoft says no, some industry observers say that the company has to do something to reverse the unpopularity of current versions Windows Mobile, as Apple and Android continue to make gains.
