Microsoft CIO has challenges in play

Microsoft spends about 3 percent of its revenue on IT, and according to the vendor's CIO, it could easily spend 10 times that amount. But the goal today is to reduce what Ron Markezich calls "sustainer" costs so that more investment can be put into "builder investments." Sustainer costs is the basic spend of keeping everything running, and with some ingenuity he's managed to trim it down by 25 percent while still adding staff and adding new IT internal services. But that's just one part of the CIO's challenging role.
