Managing vendor relationships
When it comes to vendors, CIOs must take charge, striking a balance between the tactical and strategic aspects of managing the relationship. First, accept nothing less than great account management. That means regarding your account execs as equals to your own team, including them in crucial discussions and holding them accountable. Equally important is making sure your vendor's project team is top quality. Third, discuss funding cycles and other strategic planning components up front. With that information, vendors will understand what you're willing to buy and what you aren't. Also, make sure vendors understand that they aren't your sole provider, and that you will consider competing products and vendors. Make sure vendors do their homework and demand value. Finally, demand performance every day, and keep the big picture in mind.
