Managing through a recession
Okay, so your budget has been cut, and you can't hire the three IT staffers that you need to make things work. Increasing employee workloads may seem like the easy answer, but that's only a short-term solution because your employees will burn out quickly. So here are a few suggestions from CIOupdate.com on how to deal with tight budgets and an IT staff that is stretched too far:
> Focus on the right projects and jettison those that are not doable without a bigger staff.
> Invest in training so your staff can handle more than one kind of task.
> Avoid unnecessary meetings that waste time.
> Limit the number of urgent projects to avoid unnecessary stress on your workers.
Yes, times are tough, but be honest about how things are going, and drop the projects that aren't essential. In the meantime, enlist your IT staff to be part of the solution.
