Making the most of RSS
RSS, or Real Simple Syndication, is making some waves in the enterprise world. It allows companies to set up feeds to promote their companies and disseminate information, often improving corporate visibility and customer service in the process. Although RSS isn't free of problems--it can be a distraction, use up too much bandwidth and time, and be difficult to manage--these issues can be mitigated by setting up a controlled RSS environment via an enterprise RSS server. Internal benefits include the fact that IT only has to support one tool while blocking other RSS readers. What's more, alerts about external content can be set up and shared by many users, saving bandwidth and time. The feeds can also be controlled so internal employees can only access those authorized, and the level of control can be tailored for different individuals and groups. Content also can be aggregated and pushed out more easily, and with an easily auditable trail. The three main vendors of enterprise RSS are NewsGator, KnowNow and Attensa.
