Make IT active, not passive

Although it's tempting to think of the IT function as a separate entity with its own objectives and measures for internal support and customer service, that's taking the easy way out. If IT exists to serve its customers, for example, the customers must make the decisions. The IT department should also be imbued with the power to make difficult decisions and take risks. One way to do this is by allowing IT staff to spend time working in other areas of the business. Only by taking the hard road will CIOs and their organizations be viewed as indispensable and ready to take on any and all challenges.
