CIOs spend much of their time looking out for their companies and their employees. But don't overlook yourself and your career. Failure to look out for your own best interests can cause problems. In general, CIOs should be concerned about whether they have a real input on the executive committee and if they do, whether they are aligned with the business. You should also make sure that you are networked effectively in the industry, constantly refining your skill set, leadership style and business knowledge and positioning yourself well for their next opportunity.
