Look carefully at every project
The old saying, "Look before you leap" is especially true when it comes to information technology. Before an IT executive signs off on a project, it is essential to vet it thoroughly. Before all is said and done, make sure you know what you are getting into. "Technology acquisition is fundamentally flawed," attorney Erik Phelps said.
At least 25 percent of IT projects fail for varying reasons. Sometimes the vendor overpromises. Or, the integrator doesn't know the business. However, whether the software was flawed or the customer requirements were incomplete, it's essential that CIOs know what they are signing up for, and make sure they are not sold a bill of goods the vendor cannot keep. Know the kind of deal you want before you start, Phelps advises. And get your lawyer involved at the beginning.
