Laptop theft puts personal data at risk

In yet another incident highlighting data theft concerns, a laptop containing confidential and personal data on more than 20,000 students, faculty, alumni and staff of Vermont College was recently stolen from the university CIO's car. The portable PC holds six years worth of personal information including names, addresses, social security numbers and birth data information. While officials say there is no indication the data has been misused for criminal purposes, potential victims are wondering why it took the college three weeks to notify those at identity theft risk.
