Laptop battery risk may exist in other devices
August 16, 2006 — 8:01pm ET
The Dell laptop battery debacle, in which Sony batteries are being recalled from over 4 million laptops due to a potential fire hazard, could be far more widespread that initially believed, as the batteries in question also powering a number of other electronic devices in the consumer and enterprise space. The battery cells, produced between early 2004 and early 2006, are in use in Sony's own Vaio laptops but those devices aren't being recalled. The batteris have also been sold to other device manufacturers, but Sony isn't spilling the beans on just what companies it sold to, citing confidentiality agreements.
